Assaulting a Police, Resisting Arrest & Reckless Driving Charges faced by Dave’s Killer Bread Founder

Sadly, it was reported in the news today, Dave’s Killer Bread founder, David Dahl, was arrested after an alleged disturbance and pursuit that left three patrol cars wrecked in Washington County, Oregon.  Dahl was jailed on charges including assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest and reckless driving.

As a criminal defense attorney, I have always been moved by Dahl’s backstory which includes convictions for drug possession, burglary, assault and armed robbery.  Apparently, Dahl spent 15 years in prison for his various convictions.  Again, I always thought of Dave’s Killer Bread as a feel good story when you consider the number of people who pass thru the criminal justice system unable to land on their feet.  Whereas, Dahl has experienced massive growth with his business despite his criminal history.

The stigma of being an “ex-con” is difficult for many people to look past.  Not to mention background checks have become almost routine these days in all industries and at all levels of employment including entry level positions at fast food restaurants.  Dahl seems to buck this prevailing mindset.  Likely because of his own familiarity with the criminal justice system.  According to the news article, nearly a third of the 300 employees at Dave’s Killer Bread are ex-cons.

Assaulting a Public Safety Officer under ORS 163.208 is a Class C Felony.  Resisting Arrest under ORS 162.315 is a Class A Misdemeanor.  Reckless Driving under ORS 811.140 is a Class A Misdemeanor.
